Most physicians will undergo many career transitions: from residency to practice, to a new job, a new role, or a new career stage. Yet most of us have never had training in how to do this gracefully and effectively. After reviewing the medical literature and relevant leadership literature on best practices for career transitions, participants will join one of the following small groups.
1. Within institution transitions: Led by a physician who transitioned from fellow to faculty, to fellowship director.
2. Major transitions: Led by a physician who transitioned from large city academic sub specialty practice to small town generalist private practice.
3. Practice type transitions: Led by a physician who transitioned from private practice to an academic practice in the same city.
4. Mid and late career transitions: Led by a physician who transitioned mid career to a new role at a new academic institutionGroup facilitators will briefly share Pearls and pitfalls regarding their personal transitions and gather these from the group to allow for interactive discussion.
Each group will participate in an engaging activity designed to generate a specific 'transitions check list' personal action plan. Then, the large group will reassemble for small group facilitators to share their group' wisdom with the larger group, and a Q&A with the panel. Session is applicable for those who have recently transitioned, considering a transition, or leaders who assist others in transition.
