This session will bring prosthetic device developers and clinicians together to discuss how technology advances are impacting outcomes for persons with limb amputation and how this is affecting the field of PM&R. To remain relevant, physiatrists need to keep abreast of the technology improvements and the changes in device selection, prescription rules and patient outcomes as well as the evolution in rehabilitation techniques. Physiatrists need to understand the different types of prosthetic devices that use microprocessor technology, powered components and intent recognition algorithms to predict movement and reduce falls or object dropping.
