The first ever evidence-based national practice guidelines for the care of patients with a disorder of consciousness (DoC) which was published this year. These guidelines, a joint project of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research, address all aspects of the care of these patients: diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. This session will serve to introduce these guidelines to physiatrists and others who care for these challenging patients. The faculty will be be composed of the medical directors of three of the largest DoC programs in the country. The session will begin with an overview of the guidelines, highlighting ones that recommend assessments and interventions that are not currently routinely performed. Following that, the faculty will discuss implementation strategies based on their experience in their respective programs. The sessions concludes with a Q&A period with the audience.
