The 2018 American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Exchange Lecture will be presented by John P. Difiori, MD, FACSM. This presentation will focus on the relationships between early single sport specialization and long-term sport success. It will highlight recent efforts by the NBA to address these issues at the youth level.
Dr. John DiFiori is Chief of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Service and Attending Physician at Hospital for Special Surgery. Prior to HSS, Dr. DiFiori was Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine and Non-Operative Orthopaedics for the Department of Family Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA. He was Head Team Physician for the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, overseeing the care of more than 650 athletes in 24 NCAA sports.
Dr. DiFiori's expertise in treating sports injuries in competitive athletes is nationally recognized. He serves as the Director of Sports Medicine for the NBA, where he oversees the League’s research initiatives, and the development and implementation of all policies related to player health and safety. He is a former President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
